Dr. Joanne A. Matsubara PhD

Professor & Lead Principal Investigator for the UBC Research Excellence Cluster in Vision Sciences

Project description: Dr. Joanne Matsubara’s research focuses on retinal degeneration, particularly AMD, and the development of ocular biomarkers for Alzheimer’s disease. Her work aims to uncover early disease mechanisms, advance novel therapies, and enable earlier, more accessible detection of neurodegenerative disease.

How she got interested in science:  Growing up in Southern California, I spent countless hours exploring the beaches, fascinated by the unusual marine life in the tidepools. That curiosity led me to biology and marine biology, and eventually to a PhD studying the electrosensory system.  From there, I turned to a sensory system more familiar to us—vision and the eye. That journey, from tidepools to understanding how the eye works and what happens when vision is threatened, has shaped my path as a scientist.

Project description: Printha investigates early Alzheimer’s disease changes across the brain–eye–tear axis, focusing on miRNA biomarkers, APOE-related regulation, and retinal dysfunction using mouse models, human cohorts, and advanced 3D imaging.

Project description: Investigating molecular mechanisms driving AMD with blue light-induced stress models in RPE cells and dry AMD animal models to determine the therapeutic viability of targeted Granzyme B inhibition in preserving tissue integrity.

Favourite science fact: Every eye has a literal blind spot, but you never notice it as your eyes cover for each other. And if you close one, your brain instantly photoshops the missing piece in real-time.
